SHAPE THE FUTURE OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY
PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Public affairs regularly communicates with progressive organizations and offices in the House of Representatives to build community, shape legislative strategy, and facilitate an environment that enables progressives to work together as a congressional bloc that can shape the future of the Democratic Party.

GREEN NEW DEAL SIT-IN
In 2018, just one week after Democrats took control of the House, members of The Bloc joined Sunrise Movement protesters marching on Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi’s office to demand urgent action on climate change. In a historic moment, protesters were joined in Nancy Pelosi’s office by Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, calling on Pelosi to create a new select committee on climate change. In the 116th Congress, House Speaker Pelosi created the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis in the spirit of progressive’s Green New Deal. This organized action was the first step in building progressive power to win historic investments in climate. In 2020, the same leaders who sat-in on Pelosi’s office two years prior were invited to join President Biden’s climate task force to shape his campaign policies on climate action.
PRESIDENT BIDEN’S 2020 CABINET PICKS
When the Biden administration was considering Bruce Reed for a top aide position, a famous deficit hawk who led the Bowles-Simpson commission in which Democrats worked with Republicans to cut Social Security, The Bloc launched a public pressure campaign to hold the Biden administration accountable. A public petition to denounce the appointment of Bruce Reed amassed more than 35,000 signatures and a strategic communications campaign landed stories outlining progressive’s vision for Biden’s Cabinet in top tier outlets like The New York Times, The Hill, NBC, Politico and more. The Bloc’s consistent and proactive advocacy helped shape the beltway media’s response to Biden’s cabinet picks and won several encouraging appointments including Janet Yellen and John Kerry.
